New Study Flexibility for Work Permit Holders in Canada
Reviewed October 5, 2026.
A temporary Canadian immigration policy took effect on September 4, 2026. It gives eligible work permit holders flexibility to complete a course or program lasting six months or less without a separate study permit. It supports short-term skills training, credentials and professional licensing.
Who may qualify?
You must hold a valid work permit. Your entire course or program must last six months or less, and you must complete your studies before your work permit expires.
An expired permit does not qualify under this policy, even if you have applied to extend or replace it. Do not assume a pending application allows you to continue studying.
Check the impact on your immigration plans
If you study full-time under this policy, work experience gained during your studies does not count toward Canadian Experience Class eligibility or Canadian work-experience points in Express Entry.
Employer-specific work permit holders may need another work permit for a co-op placement with a different employer or occupation. Open work permit holders do not need a new permit for that reason.
Other work permit conditions and applicable immigration requirements still matter. Discuss any changes to your employment arrangements with your employer.
How long is the policy available?
The policy is scheduled to expire on December 31, 2027, and may be revoked earlier without notice. Your authorization ends sooner if your work permit expires.
Plan before you enrol
Borama Immigration can review your status, proposed studies and immigration goals through an online consultation. A short course does not guarantee permanent residence or a future immigration invitation.
